Disclaimer: This article was published in Portuguese back in December 2019 and that’s why I’m mentioning Christmas. Enjoy my rambling. 🙂
Since we are at a time of the year where there are Christmas songs everywhere, I found myself thinking about some of my favorite video game soundtracks.
The soundtrack of any piece of entertainment has always had a big impact on it. Video games are no exception to the rule, and more and more, there’s a meticulous care when it comes to producing and playing them. The following titles are some of my favourites from the last few years, and musical accompaniment has had a great importance in immersing these worlds.
Without further ado, let’s go.
A mixture of gothic sounds and double bass that inject us with high loads of tension and suffocation at many moments of the game. It is particularly in boss battles that the audio experience has transported me a different place, providing extremely intense moments, where even my breath stopped at each new blow inflicted by the enemy. The question is: when can we expect Bloodborne 2?
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Through abandoned forests or castles, mountains or mysterious catacombs, the Witcher 3 experience would never be the same if the soundtrack was not of high quality. For months and months, it accompanied me on an epic adventure that I will forever remember as my favorite game of Playstation 4. This says a lot because it comes from someone who is not exactly a fan of RPG’s. Besides the game, the dashboard themes in Playstation 4 also continued to give music for months and months. It was never too much. Okay, at some point, I had to change.
The songs in these games are something very unique. In a world where sadness and melancholy reign, the musical performance made these feelings even heavier, resulting in a very special experience. For a minimally “true” ending, the game requires you to play at least three playthroughs. For those who still have to play the game, I won’t spoil it so let’s say that each of them differs from the previous one in several ways, offering a continuous experience. Without a doubt, one of the best games of this generation.
Red Dead Redemption 2
After a campaign of over 40 hours and quite intense and emotional moments, all this would not be possible if the soundtrack was not great as everything else. Below, you can see a performance with some songs from the game, which happened during the 2018 Videogame Awards. Without a doubt, a moment that I like to remember from time to time.
The Last of Us
Like many other people, the first time I heard about Gustavo Santaolalla was when I wanted to know more about the soundtrack of The Last of Us. The music wastes no time in pull us in and starts right off in the menu. The excellent chords accompanied me on a journey that I will never forget and that will forever be one of my favorite games.
